the club

Redbacks Football Club is a family friendly club that is large enough to offer you and your child the full soccer experience while still small enough for you to know everyone’s name. Redbacks has been going for 45 years. Many people say our View Street grounds are the best in the competition.

Redbacks is part of the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association (GHFA) which extends from Ryde to Kenthurst and play mostly on Saturday. Girls’ and women’s teams play in the North West Sydney Women’s Soccer Association which covers a similar area to GHFA. Teams in this competition play on a Sunday.

Information about games

At what times are the games played?
Mini teams play between 8:30am and noon on Saturdays.
Junior teams play between 8:30 and 1:30 pm on Saturdays.
Senior teams usually play on Saturday afternoons and some Sunday games.
The Women’s and Girls competition is played on Sundays.

Do we have to play in the school holidays?
With the popularity of soccer and the limited grounds available, the Association unfortunately must schedule matches on Saturdays in the school holidays for all competitive teams.  Last year minis were given the middle week of the holidays off since they are not competitive.  If you are going away it is important to notify your team manager as soon as possible so they can make appropriate arrangements.

What happens when it is raining? Do we still play?
If it is raining or has rained, you must go to the ground unless your team manager calls you to tell you that the game has been called off. The game is not cancelled unless the grounds are sodden and closed for safety reasons.

Volunteers Needed!

Coaches and Managers

Every team requires a coach and a manager.  Teams are responsible for filling these positions and advising the registrar.  Parents usually fill these roles in the Mini and Junior divisions).  Considerable training and support is on offer for all coaches to fill this extremely rewarding role.  Managers are also provided with easy-to-use instruction manuals and excellent support from Co-ordinators, so you have nothing to fear when stepping up to play your part in yours and your child's football team.

Ground Dressing

If your team is drawn to play the first or last game on View Street then you will be expected to help set up or undress the grounds. This is true for Sunday games as well. Your manager will be informed of your obligations in this area.

Canteen

Our busy View Street canteen is run by volunteers.  Your manager will advise you when you are required to fulfil a shift on the roster.

History

Honour Roll
Club Perpetual Trophies

1962 Carlingford Redbacks Soccer Club had its beginnings under a different name - West Epping Soccer Club - and fielded four teams.

In those early days the home ground was West Epping and was shared with YMCA.

1967 Land was acquired from OTC (Overseas Telecommunications Commission) for the creation of the Roselea Oval.
1968 Roselea Oval is officially opened. The West Epping Redbacks, as the Club was then known, moved headquarters to Roselea Oval and shared the grounds with the newly formed Roselea Soccer Club.

The Club made the bold move of appointing a professional coach, for the fee of $500 per season to upgrade the playing and coaching standards of the Club. This practice, believed to be unique in junior soccer continued for 4 years with dramatic success and Redbacks had arrived in the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association record books.

1969 There was a move to amalgamate the Club with the fledgling Roselea Soccer Club but finally the two clubs decided to continue independently.

The Club strip in those early days was a shirt made from black sailcloth, with a red vee, white shorts and black socks with red tops. The mothers sewed the shirts at home.

1971 The West Epping Soccer Club updated its constitution and changed its name to Carlingford Redbacks Soccer Club.
1972 The Club's first visit to Canberra was in 1972 and has been continued ever since with alternating visits to and from Phillip Club each year.
1973 New uniforms were introduced, with teams turned out in red shirts with black bands on the necks and arms, black shorts with the Redbacks emblem embroidered on the leg and red socks with two black bands. The Club had grown to 19 teams.
1974 The Club fielded 24 teams.
1975 The first All Age teams competed for the Club, with most of the players having graduated through the junior ranks, and the Club had swollen to 28 teams. The Redbacks U11/1 team was beaten in the 1975 Grand Final of the Champion of Champions competition.
1976

The Redbacks U12/1 (formerly the U11/1's) team became the Club's first Champion of Champions winner.

The Club had grown to 32 teams.

1977

The Club fielded 31 teams.

The U17/1 team lasted to the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions whilst the U8/1 team lost their chance to become our second Champion of Champions by losing the grand final 0 - 1 on a goal scored in the last 3 minutes.

The decision was made to build a Clubhouse at Roselea Oval.

1978 The Club fielded 34 teams.

The Club phased in updated club uniforms - open necked shirts with black neckbands and diamond stripes on the shoulders

The Clubhouse fund raising program had about $11,000 in the bank by the end of the season with Clubhouse planning well advanced.

The Club's first life members were announced - Jack Henry, Bryan Powell, and Brian Tindale.

1979 The Club fielded 34 teams.

The Club further updated club uniforms - Shorts were black nylon with red diamond stripes and the Club emblem was moved from the shorts to the shirts.

Sponsorship from Carlingford Court shopping centre commenced and the first Carlingford Court Championship was conducted.

Redback's achieved the distinction of becoming the largest club in the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association.

1980 More to come ...
2008 The Club unanimously voted to change the name of the Club from Carlingford Redbacks Soccer Club to Redbacks Football Club. The name change reflected the now long standing home grounds at West Pennant Hills which meant that Carlingford was no longer truly reflective of the widespread membership base, as well as the national re-branding of the Soccer code to Football.
2009 Following the name change, an updated playing strip was introduced. Shirts remained predominantly red, with pronounced black "swooshes" at the side of the torso. The black shorts added similar red "swooshes", and re-introduced the Club logo onto the shorts, in addition to the shirts. A massive membership drive on the back of the name change saw over 100 new players join the Club, with around half of those coming into the Minis.
